1. Seed preparation.
Lotus seeds can remain viable for up to 100 years, but usually this period is
10-15 years old. All this thanks to a very hard shell. So the first step is scarification. It is necessary to damage this shell. For this, sandpaper, a file, a needle file are used. We break the shell at the blunt end of the seed, usually there is a shallow depression. The seed germination hole should be approximately 3 mm in diameter. It is necessary to work with a scarifying device very carefully so as not to damage the germ of the seedling in the seed.
2. Germination of seeds.
After scarification, we place the seeds for germination in a container with clean warm water and a temperature of about + 25 ° C. Water should be clean, but not tap. Best suited spring or river, but from clean reservoirs. Water needs to be changed twice a day. In the morning and in the evening. Preferably at the same time. Seeds will germinate fairly quickly in 5-7 days. At the same time, they should sink to the bottom. In this container, before transplanting to a permanent place, germinated seeds must be kept for 2 weeks.
3. Preparing a container or pond for permanent growth and planting lotus plants.
Lotus can be grown both in an aquarium and in a glass container with a volume of 10-20 liters. First of all, we fill the bottom of the container with a nutrient substrate. It can be silt from a reservoir, ordinary peat. We place the seedlings at a depth of about 6 cm. Next, we pour a thin layer of river sand and a layer of pebbles on top. The ratio of substrate and water should be approximately 2:1. Next, carefully add clean warm water so as not to erode the nutrient substrate. We fill to such a level that the lotus leaves are above the water level afloat. We place in a warm, bright place with a temperature not lower than + 20 ° C. Optimally +25°С.
